Card fraud fears 'at all-time high'
A new survey has revealed British consumers are more concerned than ever before about card fraud.
The poll of 1,000 people by communications firm Connected
World found that almost two-thirds (62 per cent) were worried about
the security of personal data when shopping.
Indeed, 42 per cent said their anxiety about being hit by fraud
had been strong enough to put them off making a purchase.
Elsewhere, 71 per cent of respondents felt uncomfortable about
giving their card details to someone at a call centre.
Over a quarter (27 per cent) said their fears were caused by
personal experience of identity theft or fraud linked to giving out
this information.
Almost nine out of ten (88 per cent) claimed they would ideally
like to use phone-based payment systems that hide their details
from the individual handling their call.
According to recent figures from Sainsbury's Finance, online
purchases using credit cards in the UK are worth an average of £6.4
billion every month.
